An industry-first integration brings Thermo King refrigeration unit monitoring and control directly into the Volvo Trucks infotainment interface, making in-cab management easier, safer and more efficient for drivers and fleets.

Brussels, Belgium – September  3, 2026Thermo King®, a leader in transport temperature control solutions and a brand of Trane Technologies, has partnered with Volvo Trucks to integrate transport refrigeration unit (TRU) management directly into the truck’s in-cab infotainment system. Available through Volvo Trucks’ “My Business Apps” service, this innovative application allows drivers to monitor and control their refrigerated cargo in real time without leaving the cab or relying on secondary mobile devices. Thermo King is the first in the market to offer this level of infotainment integration for TRUs, creating a new route for customers to access reefer data and controls through the truck ecosystem itself.

“The future of cold chain logistics is powered by connected intelligence, not just hardware. Digitalisation helps fleets protect uptime, increase operational visibility, support compliance readiness and make better-informed decisions across vehicles, drivers and cargo,” said Baris Akcora, Digital Solutions Portfolio Leader at Thermo King EMEA. “By bringing refrigeration management directly into the Volvo Trucks infotainment system, we are connecting the truck and the refrigeration unit in one integrated ecosystem. This collaboration brings digital intelligence into the driver’s daily workflow, helping address safety concerns around mobile phone use in the cab, simplifying day-to-day tasks and improving compliance oversight through a single interface.”

“My Business Apps is an important extension of our digital services in Volvo Connect, and integrating Thermo King’s advanced telematics marks an important step in expanding that offering,” said Annelie Norhav, Product Owner at Volvo Trucks. “Together, we are enabling fleets to use existing in-truck hardware and connectivity to improve the driver’s work environment. Thermo King’s digital architecture and expertise helped us deliver a unified solution for temperature-controlled transport, giving our shared customers a seamless, safer, and more complete experience directly from the cab.”

Enhancing Driver Safety and Operational Ease

Traditionally, managing temperature-controlled units requires drivers to either physically exit the cab to check the external human-machine interface (HMI) or rely on separate mobile devices like smartphones or tablets. Using personal mobile devices for work tasks has become increasingly complex due to strict GDPR regulations and the capital investments required for company-issued phones.

Designed for the practical realities of refrigerated transport, access to the TRU through the truck’s native infotainment environment provides drivers with a more convenient way to stay connected to the refrigeration unit while on the road. Instead of relying on a smartphone or tablet, they can view relevant unit information directly within the vehicle’s system without unnecessary disruption to the journey.

For transport operators, the value goes beyond convenience. The solution supports better visibility of refrigerated assets, smoother workflows and improved decision-making in real time.

Addressing the industry’s growing focus on cybersecurity, the in-cab application is built with robust end-to-end encryption. Unlike external physical interfaces, accessing the refrigeration system via the truck’s side display requires credentials and secure login verification. This closed-loop in-cab ecosystem ensures that only authorised personnel can view or modify cargo parameters, reinforcing fleet cybersecurity and protecting high-value, temperature-sensitive products.

The service is now available via the Volvo marketplace on trucks equipped with the latest side display (models from 2021 onwards). The initial rollout covers Australia and key European countries, including Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, Finland, France, Hungary, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Thermo King E-Volution‘s variable speed system design allows for automatic as well as driver-operated noise control, supporting early morning, late evening and residential area deliveries. Its zero direct emission operation and reduced acoustic footprint make it suitable for city centres, low noise zones and high restriction urban areas where compliance is essential for route access and business continuity.

Reduced maintenance, increased uptime

The platform’s simplified electric design uses fewer moving parts, reducing wear, lowering maintenance requirements and contributing to higher uptime. Service routines are streamlined to support stable performance across multidrop and variable load operations.

Enhanced fleet visibility through integrated telematics

E-Volution includes built-in telematics providing real-time performance data. Operators can access accurate temperature logging, system alarms and adjust parameters remotely, improving load protection and operational oversight. These insights support proactive maintenance planning, rapid response to events and more efficient fleet scheduling.

Highly efficient use of power for extended BEV range

Thanks to its high voltage DC system design, E-volution can connect directly to the high-voltage DC ePTO (electrical Power Take-Off) of a wide range of validated BEVs. This feature, combined with the variable speed system design, ensures the most efficient use of electrical power avoiding energy loss from AC conversion and minimising the impact on battery range.

Thermo King, as a brand of Trane Technologies, continues to advance practical electrification technologies that allow transport operators to meet regulatory demands, maintain performance and control total cost of ownership. E-Volution reflects this commitment, providing refrigeration capacity, compliance support and operational transparency required in today’s refrigerated transport market.

Brussels, Belgium – April 23, 2026Thermo King®, a leader in transport temperature control solutions and a brand of Trane Technologies, has received the Cold Chain Sustainability Award – Technological Breakthrough: Sustainable Partnership Project. The award recognises Thermo King’s collaboration with KDM Solutions and Blue Cube PCS to deliver a new generation of firesafe, low energy portable cold stores for the UK. Blue Cube PCS provides rental cold storage solutions across the UK, and KDM Solutions manufactures high-performance, ready-to-operate cold stores for temperature-controlled logistics.

The project demonstrates how sustainable design and manufacturing can deliver measurable environmental gains across the product’s lifecycle. By using the electric Thermo King Advancer A‑500E trailer unit instead of refrigeration systems typically fitted to cold stores, KDM Solutions and Thermo King demonstrated that the energy efficiency and performance benefits proven in road transport can be transferred into the cold storage sector. Testing showed the A-500e used around 50% less grid power than alternative equipment. Remote settings adjustments and diagnostics, along with stable grid performance, further reduce engineer call‑outs and secondary emissions.

Blue Cube PCS has already deployed multiple A‑500E‑refrigerated cold stores through KDM Solutions, with demand expected to grow as the partnership scales through 2026.

“Winning this award is a significant recognition of what can be achieved when industry partners work with a shared purpose,” said Jon Jerrard-Dinn, Rental and Strategic Segments Sales Manager at Thermo King UK. “The Advancer A-500e was engineered to push the boundaries of electric trailer refrigeration, and seeing its benefits transfer so effectively into the portable cold storage sector is a proud moment for our team. This collaboration shows that sustainability gains are strongest when manufacturers and operators understand the applications’ specific requirements and innovate together.”

Delivering a new benchmark for sustainable portable cold storage

The project began directly from Blue Cube PCS’s brief for a fireproof, low energy cold store that would be fully operational on arrival. KDM Solutions developed a long‑term, sustainability‑focused design using eco‑friendly composite panels with proven insulation performance verified through rigorous in‑house and third‑party testing. Every unit is manufactured at KDM Solutions’ dedicated facility to ensure complete control over quality and consistency.

The Thermo King Advancer A-500e proved central to delivering the required environmental and operational performance. Tests showed that the A-500e unit, originally engineered for trailer refrigeration, could handle UK grid instability without requiring engineers on site for surveys or commissioning. Thermo King then refined the programming and system configuration using TracKing® Energy Insights and data from units in service, ensuring the Advancer A-500e consistently met cold chain performance requirements.

Key benefits include:

Scalable growth with measurable sustainability outcomes

“By combining structural innovation, electric refrigeration technology and collaborative problem-solving, have created a portable cold store that is safe, fire resistant, energy efficient and ready to rent on arrival,” said Mark Yates, Managing Director Blue Cube PCS. “The resulting solution has reduced our service burden, improved uptime and helped us offer a more efficient, environmentally responsible rental fleet to our customers.”
